Celebrate the Holidays Mind, Body & Soul

Celebrate the holidays mind, body, and soul! It’s that time of year again!! It’s actually only days away! At this point we’re all frantic! Getting the rest of the cards out, baking, gift wrapping, still shopping because we keep forgetting someone, and of course eating… A LOT!

With all the hustle bustle make time for yourself to actually enjoy them and your loved ones. Time seems to fly by faster the older we get so here is a little mini guide of ideas on how to slow down, enjoy this time of year, soak up your family and friends, sop up the giggles and memories, and slurp up every bit of the delicious foods, spirits, and beautiful atmosphere. And don’t forget to treasure every second of it!

Mind- We tend to go a little coo-coo this time of year, because there is never enough time to ever get it all done. We drive ourselves into a dizzy trying to beat the clock and make the holidays perfect and we all know if never works out that way. So give your photo credit: www.pulsd.commind a rest this holiday by reading a book by the fire, meditate by candle light or even by the lit tree, turn on your favorite holiday music with a warm cup of cacao, watch classic holiday movies-like “Miracle on 34th Street” or “It’s a Wonderful Life,” even put your mind to rest with a 30 minute nap on the couch curled up under your favorite blanket.

Body- Boy do our bodies take a beating over the holiday season. We celebrate big! All the added sugar, alcohol, heavy dips, sauces, and desserts-pack on the pounds, make us low on energy, and left feeling weighed down. Not to mention there’s not much time for a workout and we’re completely sleep deprived! So give your body a break. Cook something healthy and nurturing. Make homemade soups or good for you comfort foods. Take a Pilates or Yoga class. Got a little more energy? Jump into a spinning class or take that kickboxing class you’ve always wanted to. It’ll help relieve tension and tired muscles and you’re guaranteed instant energy as soon as you begin moving. Turn off the tv and give your body the rest it needs. Shoot for 7 or more hours! You definitely deserve it!

Soul-This is a great time of year to start searching you soul. New Years is right around the corner! We all get a clean slate and a fresh start for the year so really dig deep this year and listen to your heart and soul for what you really want for 2013. What do you want to accomplish? What are your goals or aspirations? Give into your passions. Chase your dreams. Spend more time with your family. Relax. Take care of yourself and your health. But remember to make some resolutions you can actually achieve. And always nurture you soul!

Happy Holidays Everyone! I hope you receive gifts of love, laughter, hope, joy, and smiles this year! I’m spending some extra time with my little ones who are so excited for Santa-which makes it even more fun for me! Thank you for all your support and following my posts this year! Hoping 2013 brings lots of new opportunities for us all!

Happiness-Affecting the Mind & Body

Being happy truely affects our overall health and well being. Everything from digestion, blood pressure, sleep, eating habits, relationships with family and friends, energy levels, the list is endless. In a world surronded by contant negativity it’s no wonder we’re all overly stressed, plagued with chronic illness and disease, depressed, and easy to develop addicting habits including food, sugar, smoking, and alcohol. And negativity continues to breed negativity, until it becomes a vicious ugly cycle.

So, what if you could change your whole lifestyle just by changing your mood, thought process, or even your actions. The mind/body connection is just as it says. Your mind controls how your body is feeling, how you take care of your body, and how you use your body depending on your emotions.

Finding happiness can mean having a bigger purpose in life, being full-filled, or having a deeper sense of meaning. Happier and optimist people have stronger immune systems, live longer, look younger,  have better relationships, live enriched lives, and develop healthier habits.

How does happiness effect the mind? It stimulates the brain, increases attentiveness, produces serotonin, improves mental productivity and ability to think. The body reacts to being happy by lowering blood pressure, breathing and heart rates slow down, you  get better sleep, make healthier diet decisions, have a better immune system, and greatly increase your energy levels.

How To Cope with being Overwhelmed!

Well, today I had a whole other post in mind, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed this morning! After 2 weeks of sick babies, trying to promote and start up 2 new businesses, finishing up another certification/school, soliciting a finished novel, starting three new book ideas, running a house hold, not to mention all the other things I think I can take on, as well as functions, and meetings I try to attend. Plus it’s been between 70-80 degrees here this week, I tend to get the gardening bug and want to be outside doing whatever I can to enjoy the sunshine. Wheeeeww! Now I feel better! :) With that said I do it to myself. I want to always do everything and as much as I can and we all know we can’t do it all. So in honor of my tears and being overwhelmedthis morning, I decided to sit on my front porch in the rocking chair with a cup of tea, with the sun beating down on me, and write to center my soul a little. Here’s a few ways with dealing and coping with being stressed or overwhelmed.

  1. Find a quiet spot and close your eyes- find some where away from all the distractions and the noise and close your eyes and listen to the silence. Clear your mind, center yourself, and calm your nerves. Try to just be for a good 10 minutes. (This is hard for some one who can’t sit still, like me)
  2. Breathe Deep- Focus on taking full deep breaths, this also helps with releasing tension and removing toxins and stressors from the body. Try inhaling through your nose to fill your lungs full of air and then slowly exhale through your mouth to release all the air from your lungs. Try to do 6-8 full breaths. This wil also help your posture by sitting up straighter to breath more deeply
  3. Proritize and Take Action- The best way to feel less overwhelmed and more productive is to make a list, put the most important things on top of the list and then work your way down to things you hope to accomplish for the day. Then start tackling your tasks.
  4. Focus on your Progress- Most days you’ll never accomplish your to do list, I surely never do. But I try to carve out atleast 15-30 minutes, depending on the day for fresh air, exercise, or “me time” as they call it. Not very often for us mamas out there! But focus on what you have accomplished for the day. Maybe you got your exercise it, or spent 30 minutes outside soaking in the sunshine and all the signs that spring is right around the corner. Maybe you didn’t get the whole house cleaned but maybe you got the laundry done and the dishwasher emptied. Or maybe you got a healthy fullfilling dinner made and got to read your little ones their favorite book. Try to look at the positives for the day and not all the things you didn’t get done. It always makes me feel more productive when I think about all the things I got to cross off my list then what I didn’t!

So, I hope this helps if any of you are feeling a bit overwhelmed or want to just drop the to do list and enjoy this incredible weather we’re having on the East Coast. I know just doing these things made me feel better and it always helps if you have a friend to chat with that understands your pain
